If you're trying to picture a dwarf without his beard and he catches you, just tell him you're trying to imagine him naked; it would be less mortifying.
Idea came when I was drawing a (serious) picture of Gimli. I always start with the head shape and I was thinking: WOW. this looks *really* strange. .....I wonder what Gimli would look like without a beard?
