A more traditional dragon.

I tend to stay away from scales. They're a lot like math. I can sometimes be lazy of the brain and will shirk. When you shirk on visual math, it shows. The more complex the visual equation, the more I shirk. Scales are complex with several variable such as scale shape, scale size, and the way those differently sized and shaped scales map to the different sizes and shapes and perspectives and curves of the body. Each variable has to be correct and consistent for the final design to look correct and consistent.

So I got on my case for being lazy and made myself draw scales. Shame at seeing the product of this laziness will hopefully make me more discerning and specific in the future. :D

You are too hard on yourself. Aren't we all at times? The effort of making even an attempt at scales that are not all the same size, flat or one sided brings a wealth of detail to this fellow. The expression is icing on the cake.

Totally agree with you about the scales thing only instead of being lazy about them I get confused. Gotta do a lot more scale studies. Even though you hate drawing scales, I really love seeing the finished product. It adds such a level detail that wasn't there before. Loving the fishy fins on the side of its head and its overall mischievously fun demeanor. How in the world did you get it to grin like that?

I can understand about the scales. But unlike you. I suck so much at them. But yet you make it look so easy.
