finished speed painting meme by hibbary finished speed painting meme by hibbary
Soooooo :iconbobbie-the-jean: suggested I turn my speedpainting into a meme and I thought that sounded like a swell idea. Here's my finished version. I wasn't wholly true to the times because I was jumping up to eat soup or whatever else but I fudged it only by a minute or two.

I'll be uploading the actual template next.

All of these photos are my own taken at various locations.

Here's the link to the PSD file:

I made a couple of different layers so an individual can arrange them however they want.

You can change the text.

You can crop off the notes section.

You can crop off however many speed paintings you want to (you don't have to do ten).

You can change the minutes.

Whatever helps you to paint. Remember that the aim is to learn, so if you feel like you'd really benefit from going a few more minutes, fixing some mistakes, go ahead and do so :3

I'm just curious Hibs, Do you use the colour picker when you're doing these? (like the eye drop tool) to take the colours from the pictures, or do you pick your own colours?

I try not to use the color picker. It's very tempting, but you learn more if you try to color match with your eyes. Sometimes, though, I get so flummoxed, I pick a color and look at the hex to figure out where I'm going wrong.

hehe... that'll be my next challenge then... doing the meme again, with different pictures, and NOT using the colour picker at all :3 I bet it'll take twice as long! :D lol

I does take longer, yeah. You have to stop and see how your colors are interacting. A lot of the time, you've got to change them. But that's alright; it's part of the learning experience.

yeah.. I find a lot of the time it's not so much about picking the right colours but how they're sitting with the colours around them? (if that makes sense?) ... I spent an hour painting a cup of coffee I found in a cafe on saturday (on my ipad, so no colour picker) and it was really interesting thinking about the colours and how they react together. :)

Did you do any color sampling from the original photos, or was it all color picker by hand?

I did notice, though, that as you were doing the longer ones, your accuracy in color matching improved drastically. Is this just because you had more time to work on them, or because of all the stuff you learned doing the shorter ones?

I think maybe it was a few things. When doing the longer ones you can afford to 'fix' colors. If I chose something incorrectly I could go and fiddle around to find a better match. Not so much when you have only three minutes. Also I was just getting more accurate as I did more practice. As with figure drawing it takes some warming up every session. The super short ones are really more of a warming-up exercise to get you in the mode of getting things down as fast as possible.

One more question.. did you pick up your colors from the reference via pipette or did you chose your own colors, by eye?

I tried to match as best I could but sometimes I'd use the color-picker if I was having a lot of trouble, to see where I was going wrong.

I had no clue what speedpainting was, I used to think it was a specific paint program. ;D Didn't realize it was an exercise to do studies and quick paint sketches. I've never done one, but would be fun to do a meme of them, just something small.

Haw, I've had moments like that. :3 Yeah, usually speedpaintings are an hour or so long so these are *extreme* speed paintings. They're very fun but can be super frustrating while you're doing them because the impulse is always to slow down and fiddle when you really want to use huge brushes and let mistakes be.

And again this looks really great. Especially the ones you did in ten and fifteen minutes. It once again interesting to see what our eyes can do when they need to make additions to those kind of pictures. The notes are quite nice to read too and they help to see what you think about the pictures:D Nice meme. I am looking forward to see what others will make out of it:D
