Golden wings

Description

for :iconsuper-pickle: of her character Simon the cat. Simon has yellow markings very much like bird wings on her shoulders. Here, she and a friend are comparing wings. X3

oil on bristol.

Been having a lot of fun with my oils lately. I feel like I've learned a lot in the past few days alone about color mixing. Watercolor usually relies on the white paper for luminosity and paler colors. When you throw opaque white into the mix, suddenly things become really different in terms of paint application and color choices.

One thing is for certain: Turpenoid natural = the king of solvents. Seriously. It smells pleasantly of oranges and not chemical death. Also it's nice and thick. Amazing for mixing. It's expensive, but totally worth it!

Another thing I've learned with this piece is that prismacolor pencils respond really strangely to solvent. And only certain ones. I used a dark purple pencil to lay down my lines, and the turp. pulled out the blue and what was left was glaringly bright neon pink.. I covered up most of it, but it still shows through here and there.

This is beautiful! I love the detail you put into the picture, especially the feathers, the reflections in Simon's eyes and the lines of her fur. Even though the pink wasn't intended, I think it looks great because that might be how cats see the world. As an earlier poster said, the pink adds more depth without becoming overpowering. I honestly thought you'd done it that way on purpose.
